Ballet top DELPY is inspired in equal parts by Julie Delpy's character, Celine, in the film Before Sunrise and the ballet leotards I wore as a child. A simple basic with a flattering touch of elegance, ballet top or dress DELPY will become a versatile staple in your capsule wardrobe perfect on a warm summer day, or as a light layering piece under a cashmere cardigan on cooler days.
DELPY is an easy-to-wear camisole top that is fitted in the bust and looser around the waist and hips. As a dress, it loosely graces over your hips and has a unique rounded corner and slit. DELPY has a bust gather and thin straps with three options of back views, including a scoop back (view A), straight straps (view B) and cross straps (view C), allowing you to customize your top or dress to fit your own personal style.
This pattern was drafted for a B/C cup and approx. 168 cm or 5ft.6". The instructions are for a standard sewing machine and include detailed instruction on creating French Seams.

I’ve made two Delpy tops so far, but will likely make more. The first was in a plain, deep red cotton with a simple gather at the centre front - it fitted me beautifully without any need for a bust adjustment. So, I launched into the second Delpy, this time in an embroidered linen I bought in Tokyo years ago and have had squirrelled away, waiting or the perfect pattern. Instead of the facings, I bout the neckline and armholes and added a crochet-lace trim in a co-ordinating colour, plus I handstitched a length of ribbon down the centre of the gathers for an added feature. It turned out really nicely. Recommend this pattern for a versatile but flattering summer top.
I've tried this pattern twice now but just can't seem to get it right - size 7 is too big and gapes under the arms, but size 6 is so tight I can barely get it on over my head. The underarms are very high, and I just couldn't make head or tail of the strap instructions - I ended up just doing a simple topstitch. I think in order to make this garment fit (on me at least!) it would either need to have a zipper or be made in a stretchy fabric.
Excellent pattern! I am still working on the top but it is very well explained and the pattern was really nicely done. I am making it in linen so I think I maybe should have made it a bit bigger since there is no stretch to my fabric and no zipper or opening. I want to also make the dress. I will likely buy more patterns in the future.
Thank you for developing such modern well fitting patterns with great instructions. I made the top in a purple linen and it looks and feels wonderful. I will be making the dress next. I love your style - relaxed, resort-like and stylish.
I loved making this blouse! The strap variations give you incredible variety. I used a yarn dyed linen that was not quite opaque and the facing makes this 100% wearable with or without a bra. The instructions were detailed & a great reminder for me on how to make french seams. I loved it so much I can't wait to make the dress too; though I will likely have to combined sizes to make the dress fit my hips. Can't wait to make more! This is a wardrobe stable for sure.
